Here is my experiment shader on how to create rim light without light in a way to optimize the render and the process for the compositing step.
It can be very useful to create rimlight pass.
You can create different rim : left, right, top, bottom, back, front and setting different thing like rotation, spread, smooth, fg contribution ...
The shader work with the vector of the mesh and follow the camera movement.
